Why
Recalibrate ?
Liquid-In-Glass Thermometers are
extremely accurate, stable, economical and easy to use
temperature indicating devices. Since their introduction 400
years ago, few engineering changes have altered their function.
Unlike their electronic or bi-metallic counterparts,
Liquid-In-Glass thermometers have no moving parts, need no
outside power sources and require almost no maintenance. They
rely solely on the unalterable physical properties of the
liquid and glass materials of the thermometer. When the
instrument is heated, the liquid expands and rises up the
capillary tube. When it is cooled, the liquid contracts and
travels down the capillary. Along with the expansion and
contraction of the liquid column, the thermometer bulb itself
will expand and contract slightly. After repeated uses, even
the highest quality Liquid-In-Glass thermometer may undergo a
slight change in bulb volume due to this expansion and
contraction. If a change of this type does take place, the
indication of the instrument will also change. Recalibration
allows the user of the Liquid-In-Glass Standard to maintain
accurate, reliable and consistent results when making
temperature measurements.
How Often
Should A Thermometer Be Recertified ?
Many factors determine recertification of
thermometers, such as usage, temperatures measured,
in-house procedures, and regulatory agencies' guidelines
and policies. As a general guideline for good laboratory
and manufacturing practices, thermometers should be
recertified/verified on an annual basis
What does the
Recertification Program Consists of ?
• Complete visual inspection for any
physical damage If possible the damage will be repaired.
• Thermometer readings are compared against NIST standards in
high precision calibration baths using the
comparison method at determined test temperatures.
• Each temperature is recorded to 1/10th of a scale
division.
• A calibration report is generated detailing the pertinent
information including the correction factors for each
test point.
• All calibration information is entered into the THERMCO data
storage system.
• All certification procedures are performed in accordance with
NIST and ASTM guidelines, which meet with
requirements set by regulatory agencies.
